The Atari Jaguar is a fifth generation video game console. The console competed with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega's Mega Drive and Panasonic's 3DO. It's main selling point was that it was the first 64-bit game console.

However, the graphics demonstrated looked no better than a 16 bit console. Developers blamed the difficulty of developing on the Jaguar, as it was built differently compared to other game consoles at the time. In the end, it was a commercial failure, and resulted in Atari's withdrawl from the video game console market.

A CD add-on (similar to Sega's Sega CD) was released shortly before the console was discontinued in 1996. Very few games were released for this system, as it was released close to the end of the Atari's lifespan.

The Atari Jaguar Pro was proposed by Hasbro soon after the system's release. It was to combine the Atari Jaguar and the Atari Jaguar CD together in one console. It was never released due to the Jaguar's failure.

Atari Panther[]

Another console was planned prior to the Atari Panther. It was to be a 32-bit console that was going to superceed the Atari 7800. Atari cancelled this is favour of the Atari Jaguar. This meant Atari missed out on the fourth generation, crippling the Jaguar's chances to be a successful system. Only 3 games were ever developed for this console, with all 3 of them later being ported to the Jaguar.
