MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk-Operating System for Short) was a famous family of operating systems in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. There were numerous renditions of MS-DOS, some dating back 1981. These operating systems used a basic text interface, but could render graphics. This led rise to several games such as Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Alone in the Dark, and many more. A cut-down version of MS-DOS is still present on later versions of Windows, under the name, CMD.EXE.

MS-DOS Mode[]
In Windows 9x, the way MS-DOS is set up is different than it was in older versions of Windows, unlike older versions where you boot up MS-DOS, and then launch Windows itself. MS-DOS launches Windows, and then it boots into the operating system. In Windows 95 and Windows 98 (and Windows ME with unofficial patches), there is a option in the shut down menu to "boot into MS-DOS Mode", which takes you into the MS-DOS interface.
